Building an Inclusive Classroom

My students need an inclusive classroom. Help me give them the resources they need to stay on task, stay focused, and stay comfy, such as Wobble Chairs, cushions, and a weighted vest.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a self-contained special education classroom with all diverse learners. Their needs range from autism to learning differences. I want to change the environment to be as inclusive as possible and I believe with the right tools I can set up each of my students for success!

I have 16 lively students on my caseload and they are all bursting with personality.

Our urban public school follows the International Baccalaureate program which requires our students to be knowledgeable, principled, risk-takers, open-minded, inquirers, thinkers, and caring individuals. In order to help my students meet the program requirements, I need to make a more inclusive environment. My goal is for our classroom to feel like a second home where students can feel like themselves and have the freedom to be themselves.

My Project

Students will be able to stay focused on reading by sitting in the wobble chairs that provide the extra stimulation those with attention needs require to focus. For my struggling readers they can have an opportunity to practice their fluency with the hear myself sound phones without fear of embarrassment of making a mistake. All students can enjoy the comfort of a cushy pillow while reading in the free choice corner. For my student with sensory issues, he can have an opportunity to get his pressure vest to help him focus. And for those students who get distracted easily, headphones can provide a much-needed barrier between classroom noise and thinking! Not to mention, high quality headphones are great for our listening center!

Sensory tools and supports will help us to achieve a profound difference in participation levels and academic performance in our students.

Inclusion goes farther than mainstreaming in assuring that children will be educated daily with their non-disabled peers, allowing the enhanced development of social and academic skills that are so important to their happiness and success as adults.
