Building an Awesome Class Store

My Project

I teach 5th grade at a Title I school, which means the majority of my students come from low income families. In my classroom students have the opportunity to earn 'class cash' throughout the day by showing Grit, Kindness, Respect, and Responsibility. By rewarding students with class cash it encourages them to make right choices, stay on task, and even remind their peers of what they should be doing.

Our class store opens every Friday and contains items ranging from $5-$200, this helps students learn the real world skills of budgeting and saving.

Students can choose to spend $5-$10/week on some candy or a bag of chips or they can save their money to get a bigger item such as pop-its, mini lego sets, art sets, sketch books, etc. I aim to gear the items in my store to what my students are interested in to increase their motivation since they are more likely to work to earn class cash if they want something that is in the store.

While I have already purchase quite a few items for the store on my own, it is something that I am always adding to since students are purchasing items weekly. A lot of my students are food motivated so the things that tend to go the quickest are chips and candy so it can be hard to keep those stocked.
