This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are all from low-income families that do not have a lot of resources. My school is pretty diverse, serving a variety of ethnicities. There are many students who are English Language Learners.
My students are eager to learn!
They love to do hands-on activities. That is when they are most engaged.
I work hard to build their confidence as learners because many of them have a hard time believing in themselves and believing that they can learn and be successful! I not only want them to learn, but to build the social skills and self-confidence they need to be successful in school and in life.
My Project
As a teacher in a high need, urban school, I see that many of our students don't have access to books at home. This year, we were able to reopen our school library after 15 years of closure. We have a part-time staff person, but there is no money for anything else. Our school library may provide the only access to books outside of the classroom for some of our students. We also know that our school library plays a central role in improving our students' literacy skills. Unfortunately, our library only has a few mismatched chairs of different sizes, some too small for the tables. In addition to providing access to books, our school library serves afterschool classes where students have time to do their homework. It’s hard for our students to read and study in the library when there aren’t enough chairs for everyone. We want our students to love the library and see that it is an important space in our school. We want every student to find a place to sit in the library, read books and do their homework in a comfortable setting.
Our students need new library chairs to make the library a more comfortable and inviting place to read a book and complete their homework.
These 30 chairs would ensure that all students have a comfortable place to sit at a table. It would make our library a more inviting and attractive place. We think it would really draw the students in. Our library provides our students with important access to books that inspires in them a love of reading. Please help our kids feel comfortable and relaxed in our library as they build their love of reading and complete their homework after school by donating to help us buy 30 new chairs.
