Building a Thinking Mathematics Classroom

Help me give my students the tools they need to thrive in a Thinking Mathematics Classroom by providing visual aids and collaborative resources that foster critical thinking, communication, and deep problem-solving.

My Project

Creating a Thinking Mathematics Classroom requires more than just desks and textbooks; it demands an environment where students can engage actively, collaborate meaningfully, and visualize their thinking. These materials will transform the traditional classroom into a dynamic space where students work at vertical whiteboards, share their strategies visibly, and build mathematical understanding through peer discussion and exploration. The magnetic borders and clips will help structure and organize student workstations, while the dry erase materials will make mathematical thinking erasable, flexible, and non-permanent.

The goals of this project are to increase student engagement, promote collaborative problem-solving, and develop a culture where students feel comfortable taking mathematical risks.

By incorporating Liljedahl's research-based strategies, I want to move away from passive learning and into a space where students actively build knowledge together. Colored pencils will allow students to highlight patterns and distinguish multiple solution paths, helping them deepen their conceptual understanding. These resources will not only enhance instruction but also empower students to see themselves as capable mathematicians who contribute meaningfully to the learning process.

What makes my students special is their resilience, brilliance, and untapped potential. Despite facing systemic challenges, they come to school with energy, curiosity, and a hunger to succeed. They deserve a classroom that honors their creativity and intellect - a space that believes in their brilliance before they believe in it themselves.
