I have amazing, creative, and hard-working fourth graders. More than half of my students come from lower socioeconomic homes. Many of my kids are ESL and qualify for special education. I have the best students and want to give them the best! Because of my students' daily obstacles, some find education very challenging. Many come to school without their basic needs being met, so it is hard for them to focus on math, science, or reading. I try to think outside the box so my kids are engaged and want to learn.
My students need tools that allow them to think.
In our classroom, I try to implement strategies from the book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. One strategy is creating an environment where collaboration and thinking can take place. This is done by providing a non-permanent vertical surface for groups to work on. We have some whiteboards, but we need an additional whiteboard so that there is space for all students. We will use whiteboards to think through math tasks, map out what we are reading about, and draw models of science phenomena. We would love your support in making thinking come to life!
