I have been attending a math cohort this year based on Peter Liljedahl's book, Building Thinking Classrooms. The goal of a thinking classroom is to get students to THINK. Research has shown that when students get the opportunity to collaborate and think, they are able to learn and retain so much more. Often in math, students are mimicking what they are learning instead of thinking through the process. Peter's research has shown that vertical whiteboards work the best in a Thinking Classroom.
It allows students to stand and not be afraid to make mistakes because their work is erasable as they are thinking through their skills.
I have implemented Thinking Classroom in my class this year, and already have seen tremendous growth in my students and their ability to think and collaborate. The only item that I don't have are vertical whiteboards for them to work. I need these whiteboards to fully implement my thinking classroom with fidelity.
