My Project

This summer I spent some of my own money to create the collaborative work environment I had envisioned for this upcoming school year. I was able to set up the classroom in July and have had the temporary boards handing for a month. They are makeshift whiteboards from Home Depot. For now, they are working, but they don't always erase well and weren't designed to be in a heavy-use environment like a classroom.

Research about building a Thinking Classroom says one of the tenets to abide by is to use vertical non-permanent surfaces for students to collaborate as they work through tasks.

The temporary surface, as opposed to chart paper, allows students to easily change their minds or make mistakes and correct them without the work being stuck there forever. The vertical nature of the boards allows for students to stand (not sitting is good! - they get their wiggles out) and also increases knowledge mobility by allowing students to see other work from groups around the room.

I'm very excited to use thinking tasks this year and to challenge students to work through difficult problems that will require teamwork and perseverance. I want them to take risks and try new things, and I know that this room configuration is the first step in that direction.
