This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My project this year is to build a thinking classroom for junior high math. What this means is that students will spend less time completing paper/pencil assignments and more time exploring math using higher-level thinking skills, small groups at the dry-erase boards, moving around the room, and independent explorations of word problems that relate to mathematics and the real world. Resources such as the Algebraic Thinking Quickies and Cooperative Learning & Algebra will help build a thinking classroom. In addition, my students need more outlets to charge their laptops for our digital activities. We will have many interactive, electronic activities that students will be engaged in.

The markers are for students to go back and review their notes and mark the text by underlining, highlighting, writing reminders in the margins, and completing a summary of their notes using pictures and examples.

I'd like to incorporate a reward system for students who are on task, volunteer answers, or help other students. For that reason, I am requesting some hard candies and a treasure chest. Lastly, my students have a variety of sensory needs. I have alternate seating options, lamps instead of overhead lights, and space for students to stand or walk around. What I don't have are the sensory materials for students who need to fidget in order to relieve anxiety, energy, or psychological stress. For this reason, I have added sensory fidget toys to my cart.

In Junior High, I have the most amazing students who are hungry to learn. The academic levels are mixed within the classroom, so differentiated instruction and pairing of partners is critical to help all of my students succeed.

I'd love to give my students the learning opportunities they are deserving of, in an academically rich environment.
