This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The other day one of my students said, "Teacher, we forgot to do math today." The truth of the matter is that we do math everyday. However, my students are having so much fun playing with hands-on games that they don't realize that they are actually learning math.

My students live in a rough neighborhood in South Los Angeles.

Many of them spend countless hours at school. They are dropped off as early as 7:00am and do not get picked up until 6:00pm. Since they all qualify for free federal lunches they receive most if not all their meals at school. At an early age they have encountered tremendous hardships and thus have become resilient. They are amazing individuals who aspire to greatness and are hungry for knowledge. They try hard and love being in school.

My Project

Learning about solid geometric shapes is an abstract concept that can not be learned from a flat piece of paper. Therefore, my students need geometric shapes to learn about them. They need to see them, touch them, and experience them. They also need to be able to manipulate place value blocks in order to learn the value of digits. The place value blocks will help my students learn how to add and subtract with regrouping. Using the place value blocks will facilitate learning because they can make a connection with the numbers and their value. These invaluable resources will help facilitate my students' learning in math. They will learn about geometric shapes, place value, money, addition and subtraction.

These resources are essential to every classroom.

My students need to learn math with a hands-on approach. Math is a skill that is needed not just in first grade, but for the rest of their lives. These resources will not only help my students acquire a strong foundation in math, but will also help them learn to love math. Please help me in producing proficient students for a better future.
