Building a Strong Classroom Community Through Picture Books
My students need these books. My students need books that provide them with new experiences along with making connections and opportunities to place themselves in someone else's shoes.
My school is a small school of 250 students. We are often overlooked because we are so tiny. Our budget is smaller than nearly every school in the district. Our school's budget covers supplies and not much else.
Our class is made up of a group of diverse learners.
The students work collaboratively and independently throughout the day. They love to read with each other and by themselves. The students are very supportive of each other and share a love of learning.
My Project
Every day we come together as a class for a picture book read aloud. It is one of our favorite parts of the school day.
Picture books are magical.
They are the perfect segue into sophisticated conversations about our lives and the world we live in. They help us with empathy. They provide an opportunity to talk about what is important to us by making connections. They provide us an escape. We think critically when we infer from pictures about the mood, tone, & feelings of the characters in the book without the author explicitly telling us. Picture books have incredible messages and themes.
