This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have five classes of New Arrival English Learners. They all have arrived in the United States during the past two years from places like Afghanistan, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, El Salvador, and Brazil- just to name a few represented countries. They are in a unique position where they are learning English while acquiring content at the same time. They have high aspirations, but are high school students with only a couple of years before they graduate and move on to further their education or join the work force. Knowing English and being able to carry on conversations in English is imperative, but many students have found it difficult to acquire academic vocabulary especially science content vocabulary.

I would like to create reusable vocabulary practice activities where students can make deeper connections to new words; they will be utilized at stations or by students who feel they need more practice during student choice activities or even to bring home for independent study.

I am looking to make materials that are reusable as well as hard to destruct during transport or heavy use. The laminator, the lamination sheets as well as the VELCRO brand dots will make the teacher generated materials durable for year-after-year use as well as for use for many students. These materials will provide my students with a variety of learning opportunities to build their word bank. This will facilitate the use of content vocabulary during academic discourse, when topics are brought up cross content area, and when asked to make connections or build on the topics in different/subsequent science classes.
