Building a Nonfiction Classroom Library

My students need engaging nonfiction books to read about various subjects in science and math.

My Students

Many of the books that children will encounter throughout their educations will be nonfiction. In order to become proficient readers of informational text, they need to be exposed to a rich variety of books in this genre. Sadly, my students do not have access to many interesting nonfiction books.

My students attend public school in a large urban district.

The majority of them come from immigrant families for whom English is a second language. 55% qualify for free or reduced lunch. The families at our school believe education is important and help impart this belief to their children. As a result, the students work hard to do well and be successful. With the right tools, they would soar. Unfortunately, lack of funds means that they do not always have access to quality tools.

My Project

Children learn by taking in pieces of information and storing them. As they get older, their brains learn to organize, classify, and think critically about this stored information. Unfortunately, many children are not reading enough nonfiction material, are not reading it well, or are not retaining the information that they do read. By the time they get to high school and college, the stores of information they have to work with are limited, and as a result, so are their chances for success. The best remedy for this is practice: reading a lot of nonfiction text from an early age. With a classroom library full of interesting informational books to read, my students will get the practice they need to prepare themselves for their future educations. The more knowledgeable they are, the greater their chances for success will be.

It is well-known that the United States falls behind many other countries in its math and science education.

One way to help remedy this is to ensure that children are exposed to math and science information from an early age. This project will provide my students with a rich and varied amount of texts to read in these subjects. It will not only help expose them to the greater world, but will help prepare them for the challenges they will face in the future.
