My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title 1 school with many musical opportunities. We have an after school choir, an after school world music drumming ensemble, band and orchestra. Almost every grade level performs in a special concert once a year.
Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.
They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.
My Project
I recently took a class called Drumming Up the Fun, where literacy comes alive through playing drums and other various instruments. Donations to this project will help purchase high quality children's books that I will use to create lessons to teach important musical skills and concepts.
These books will promote literacy with the youngest students in our school.
The beautifully written stories accompanied by imaginative illustrations will capture the kids' imaginations. Every child will have an instrument to play in these stories, which will create a sense of ownership and responsibility in my students. They will practice beat, dynamics, rhythms, and watching and taking cues from a leader. These stories will be used in performances for our school community and families.
