This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hola, My name is Ms. Niño and I currently teach 4th and 5th students.

Our school has been enrolling ELL students in the past months; therefore, I would like to build a multicultural classroom.

Our ELLs are having a hard time interacting with peers because of the language barrier. Our classroom does not have any Spanish books or educational materials for students to engage with. Some of these students are at high risk because they are learning how to read and write. I have requested bilingual books, which will help students read and recognize words in Spanish and English. Also learning games will be used as centers for students to play with and interact. Lastly, I requested different art materials that will be used during the school year to represent each other's culture.

My goal for this project is for students to enhance learning in the following areas; the arts, literacy, emotional development, and social studies. I want students to learn the importance of respect. I have had students fighting because of miscommunication, and I want to show them there are different ways to express feelings. For instance, reading a book or drawing a picture. I want students to understand one another and have compassion for each other. Because my school is only 16% Hispanic, I have been accommodating my ELL students by translating their work into Spanish. My students are special because they come to school every day ready to learn. Even though my elementary has 96% of its students at high risk and are diverse learners, students have a great attitude about life and their surroundings.
