My Students
Our students come from all over Brooklyn, but have created a family within our building. We bring together diverse cultures and experiences to learn from and enjoy one anther every day.
Walking the halls of Dewey between classes, you can hear more than 50 languages spoken among our more than 2,000 students.
Despite this incredible richness of culture, as well as the wealth of our city, John Dewey High School is classified Title 1 because many of our students families live below the poverty line.
Our students work hard every day within these realities as they explore science, debate viewpoints, and in the words of one student scientist on a survey "fall in love with Biology :)".
My Project
My students have diverse special needs, but one thing they all have in common as kids who live in the city is that they struggle to spend meaningful time outside.
The resources in this project will ensure that my classes can study biology concepts in an authentic garden setting while enjoying the healing properties of plant care and sunshine.
Specifically, metal brackets will be used to construct raised garden beds with a seating area in the middle where students with disabilities as well as general education students can get their hands dirty by shoveling compost together, or simply sit and enjoy a beautiful day.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
