Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. While 40% of our students are considered English language learners, Spanish is the home language of 90% of our students. Many of our students are struggling readers, but work hard to reach their reading and math goals during the school year.

The students are excited, engaged, curious, hard workers and are eager to become better readers and mathematicians.

During math, we are solving multi-step word problems using decimals, multiplication and division and expressing our different methods for solving, while analyzing right and wrong answers.

My Project

My mathematicians are going to kick off their school year learning all about place value, decimals, multiplication, division and how to solve multi-step problems. They are going to become masters in the operations and how to become problem solvers through rich experiences using manipulatives and hands-on activities to reinforce their conceptual understanding.

In order to have a successful year, I need to be sure my students have a math-rich classroom.

This means students will have number lines, place value charts, base-ten blocks, fraction pieces and more to use during math centers and independent work.

To reinforce literacy skills and math units of study, building a math library will be so helpful and meaningful to my students. I am asking for different math related books to focus on our beginning math readiness. As our kinder and 1st grade students learn to love reading during literacy, they will have the opportunity to explore our math concepts through books as well! To reinforce our learning in the classroom for our ELL students, books will also be sent home for families to share the love of reading and math together. These fiction and non-fiction math books reinforce the concept that is currently being taught in the classroom and are an amazing way to engage and challenge learners to expand their math thinking.
