My Project
Reading for fun has been a significant challenge, with students feeling more and more behind on skills like reading fluency and reading comprehension. Building a love of reading is essential for students continued success across various subjects. I've seen a firsthand account that once students start to find certain texts inspiring enough, they then want to understand the words that go with the pictures. At this point, they slowly start retaining the foundational skills necessary for reading to learn. It starts with a personal desire and only grows from there.
By building a diverse library of non-fiction and fiction texts, students can explore for themselves the kinds of book they are interested in.
Equipping them with their own book bags makes them feel ownership over their selected books and allows them to bring these books wherever they go. One-to-one chapter books will also allow me to run book clubs. These will create a space for college-style discussions to take place about the characters and problems that come up in these highly engaging texts.
