At our high school, the student body makeup is 57 percent male and 43 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 99 percent. Our school is 1 of 522 high schools in the New York City Public Schools. This is a title I school in which sixty percent of our students are African American, thirty seven percent are Hispanic and the remaining three percent of students are deemed as other. We have a large population of economically disadvantaged students. Seventy seven percent of students are eligible for free lunch and Seventy nine percent of our students are deemed totally economically disadvantaged.
My Project
Basic supplies are crucial for my students. Helping to ensure they have a solid foundation to build on will help relieve the stress of monetary constraints and help them focus on building the skills they need to succeed. As a history teacher I am trying to educate all my students and build on their reading and writing skills. One portion of these binders will serve as a vocabulary section to build the students confidence and aid on attaining higher comprehension skills. My students range in age and are in 10th-12th grade. There are students who are struggling to meet basic literacy benchmarks.
