Building A Diverse Classroom Library

Please help me provide my students with a library of excellent books that offer good representation for their experiences and mental health.

My Project

My students are vibrant, curious, and full of potential—but they don’t always see themselves reflected in the books they read. In my 6th- and 7th-grade classroom, many students come from underrepresented backgrounds and are navigating significant questions about identity, emotions, and belonging. By filling our shelves with books that feature diverse characters, cultures, and experiences—including honest, age-appropriate stories about mental health—I can offer them stories that feel real and healing. These books will not only enhance reading engagement but also foster stronger classroom discussions, empathy, and self-confidence.

These books will give my students mirrors to see themselves and windows to understand others.

My goal is to create a classroom library where every student can find a book that makes them feel seen, valued, or inspired. Titles that feature BIPOC voices, LGBTQ+ perspectives, neurodivergent characters, and open conversations about anxiety, trauma, and healing will show students they’re not alone. These books can become trusted companions, supporting their academic growth while also helping them healthily process big emotions.

What makes my students special is their resilience. Many face challenges outside of school, such as family instability, language barriers, or the pressure of being caretakers at home, yet they still come to class ready to grow and connect. This project aims to provide them with a space where they feel understood and empowered through the stories they read.
