Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Resilient, zesty, and innovative are just a few words that describe the curious minds of the Class of 2033! These 4th graders have navigated a challenging new reality of distance learning with immense grit and an honest smile. Each scholar comes from a rich and thriving culture in the Boyle Heights community within East Los Angeles. Their school is composed of a student body population that is 95% Latino/Hispanic. Each scholar, along with their families, have committed themselves to participate in positive social change by believing in the promesa that our school has established.

Promesa means promise in Spanish.

As a school, we believe every student thrives in a rigorous academic program focused on literacy, nurtures a strong sense of self through character development, and celebrates the enduring legacy of our community. Students will leave as proud and driven leaders that take risks, persevere, and positively impact their community and society through their thoughts and actions.

My Project

Our school has recently undergone some major shifts due to COVID-19, which has resulted in an urgent need for strong literacy instruction. Because our students have not been in school in person for some months now, the typical summer slide had the ability to increase by two grade levels. Due to this, it is imperative that students are given the opportunity to engage in relevant literacy instruction at their reading level starting now. When we left school in March, 38% of all students at KPP were reading below grade level. Since we did not return to in-person instruction before the end of the 2019-2020 school year, we didn’t have an opportunity to give them their last reading assessment, which means their reading levels may have dipped even further throughout this time.

Through RAZ-Kids, our 4th graders will have instant access to a digital library of 800+ books at their individual reading level.

With hundreds of Ebooks offered at 29 different levels of reading difficulty, it's easy to put the right content in every students' hands. Through the use of this program, teachers have the opportunity to continue to differentiate reading instruction and tailor lessons to fit each child’s needs.

Kids' access their leveled text through an interactive learning portal designed to keep them motivated and engaged. Every Ebook is available in online and mobile formats, and allows students to listen to, read at their own pace, and record themselves reading. Students then take a corresponding eQuiz, complete with an extended answer response to test comprehension and determine future instruction needs. Once a child has read ten or more of the leveled eBooks and passed each of the corresponding eQuizzes, they advance on to the next reading level where they have access to lengthier and more difficult text.
