Building a Culturally Responsive Bookshelf

My Students

The seventh grade students at our rural Eastern North Carolina school are focused on getting to and through college, despite the challenges they face living in a low-income setting.

They are excited to grow their knowledge, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful later in life.

They work with urgency and grit to reach their goals, and they truly understand that their work and learning is never done. They are eager to make a difference in their lives, the lives of their families, and in their community as a whole.

My Project

I am excited that my students took the initiative to problem-solve and find a way for our class to build a library with these titles. Several students brainstormed and thought that creating a project for books through Donors Choose would be the best option for our class.

Our class library is small, and has been built almost entirely by purchases made exclusively by me, and donations of books from community members.

Recently my class was discussing the fact that our library has few books and how we could solve this problem--they are interested in reading, but there is nothing for them to read. One of them asked, "Could we raise donations for books?" After some class-wide discussion, my students researched ways to fund raise and quickly came across Donors Choose. They then decided collectively that a student-led project would be the best option to get the books we need.
