My students need the book Only One You as our "One Book, One School" read aloud. Every student and staff member in our school will paint a rock using the paint, brushes, and rocks.
Our students love to be read aloud to, no matter what age or grade. Our school services students in PreK - 5th grades. Our students are focusing on building a passion for reading and they become excited when they are allowed to participate in hands-on learning activities related to stories read. As their Media Coordinator, I would love to be able to create a community of not just readers but a community of students and staff that can all relate to each other through a story.
According to teacher/author Pernille Ripp "Picture books teach students that they can be successful readers with meaningful texts." Creating a community of readers who can find their just right book which will lead to their next just right book should be a top priority in any school.
My Project
In order to help build community in our school I am planning to do a "One Book, One School" read aloud. Studies have shown that the benefits of reading out loud to children can include: longer listening ability, larger vocabularies, and better understanding of concepts.
If an entire school has the same book read aloud imagine how these benefits could be bolstered!
Students across grade levels could participate in conversations about reading and books. It would not be just the students who benefit but also the staff; all staff would be able to talk with students about the story and reading.
The story Only One You focuses on the uniqueness of the characters which will help build "text to self" skills. As part of our library makerspace, students and staff could each design and paint their own unique rock in response to the story. These rocks will be gathered and used to create a pathway at the entrance to our school. To maintain a sense of community, new students who arrive to our school would have a chance to listen to the story from me and also design a rock (using the paint and stones) that they will be able to place with the rest of the school's, becoming part of our school family.
