Building A Community Of Readers Through Author Studies!

My students need a collection of books by three authors: Patricia Polacco, Chris Van Allsburg, and Cynthia Rylant to strengthen their reading and writing skills authentically through Author Studies!

My Students

Have you ever felt a deep connection to a book? Have you ever been truly dazzled by an author? Conducting Author Studies is one way to create a community of readers, thinkers, writers, and lovers of books!

My school is considered "high poverty".

As someone who came from a disadvantaged background, I feel motivated, every day, to set high expectations for my third graders. I believe that every child can learn, and every child can succeed if we give them the tools they need to soar to new heights. Through rigorous lessons, inquiry-based learning, and a simulated virtual United States tour, I strive to provide my students with the best I can give. That, of course, involves a whole lot of love, sweat, and tears. It also takes a lot of my own money. Our school is not able to provide teachers with ANY money to buy materials. In fact, we may not be able to go on any field trips beginning next year due to funding deficits. (It's a sad reality.) Please help me to provide my students with high quality books that will help them become better readers and writers! Thank you in advance!

My Project

Author Studies help students unlock the craft of reading and writing. Because they learn about an author's background and influences, they begin to comprehend how ideas take shape and eventually materialize as stories. Students start to identify with and emulate authors as they read with intention. I am requesting a collection of books by three authors: Patricia Polacco, Chris Van Allsburg, and Cynthia Rylant. These authors are exemplary and will, no doubt, teach my students how to craft sensational stories and how to read critically and thoughtfully. Please help my students learn more about the lives of Polacco, Van Allsburg, and Rylant to examine and how their experiences have shaped the stories they have written. Please help me teach them how to find those stories within themselves. Please help me improve their reading comprehension and fluency by exposing them to high-quality literature. Please help my students become life-long readers and ignite a fire within them.

I remember the first time I "fell in love" with an author.

I was in second grade, and the author was Ann M. Martin. I loved her believable characters, the humor, and the way I escaped into her stories. Inside of school, "reading" consisted of sequentially tearing through the stories in our basal reader and completing a seemingly endless stream of worksheets. I don't remember ever being captivated by the stories in those textbooks... but I do remember feeling a connection to Ann M. Martin.
