Building a Community of Learners

My Students

My high school is a composite of students from different minorities, with a vast majority of students who will be the first of their family to graduate high school. Only 28% of our students met or exceeded standards in mathematics and 61% met or exceeded standards in English language arts. My students' relations to other ranges from students who are comfortable engaging only with students from their community of origin and/or gender to students exploring friendships with others regardless of their communities.

Supporting students in positively interacting with each other and developing a strong learning community is an essential step for any student to succeed academically.

Teenage years are often challenging and yet a defining time in finding out who we are and navigating the variety of cultural perspectives that weave into our society.

My Project

At the beginning of the school year, it is essential that we build a strong community in our classroom so that students feel safe and willing to take risks. A major strategy is to offer students a variety of ice breakers, opportunities to introduce themselves and share their interests.

In order to build our community, we need to increase our arsenal of communication media.

A mobile easel pad will allow students to develop our community agreement. The cardstock paper, index cards, and post-it notes will be an essential support during community building activities.
