Building a Community of Learners: Classroom Supplies We Can Share

My students need everyday school supplies such as pencil sharpeners, pencils, markers, tape, staplers, and many organizers that we can all share. We are making reading ad writing accessible to all!

My Students

My students attend a fairly large K-8 school on the south side of Chicago. This year they are entering 6th grade. Middle school is a very exciting, yet scary year for students. This entire year we will focus on building classroom community while learning to be self-sufficient.

Our focus is on learning and growth and I am committed to eliminating any distractors that will deter us from our goals.

Even though I have yet to meet my students, I am excited about the learning and growth that will take place in our classroom. It is my mission to provide my students with all the tools they need to thrive in 6th grade.

My Project

Imagine being scolded by your teacher every day because you don't have the supplies you need for school. That feeling is 10 times more painful when the student honestly doesn't have the means or resources to come to school prepared.

Sometimes the only thing stopping a student from becoming college ready is a pencil.

In our classroom, the goal is that no child feels insecure about not having the basic tools they need to succeed on day to day assignments.

This project will help fund basic classroom supplies for our community of learners! The supplies will help my students thrive as individuals and as a community. Chart paper will facilitate group work as students work in teams to articulate their learning and analysis on large paper to be shared with the rest of the class. Pencils and sharpeners will be shared as they draft powerful writing without fear of making errors because pencils have erasers. Sticky notes are so that they may jot down their thoughts, extend their written responses, etc. All of the requested organizers will foster self-sufficiency so that students can clearly locate and access the materials they need to be successful for class without depending on the teacher to give them the materials. The staplers, tape, and markers will be shared in a similar way for use in various activities.
