"The rhythm is in your blood". This African proverb speaks to the need for a tubano drum in my music classroom. Drumming together gives my students a sense of unity and great accomplishment. Every child in my classroom needs a chance to feel like they are part of a community.
My students love music, especially drumming.
They range in age from preschool through fifth grade. Our Title 1 school is located in a suburban school district. Although many of my students face great challenges, they work hard to persevere. Music is an outlet for them to let loose and show their creativity. We have wonderful music performances for our school community, parents, and neighborhood. We even have a new before-school drumming ensemble that has become an instant hit!
My Project
A new tubano drum would have a very important place in my classroom. All students in our school get to play the drums. The drums are used every single day. A new tubano would be used to teach musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, and dynamics. Through drumming activities students learn to focus, listen, watch a leader, and watch each other. They learn how to work together to produce a great performance.
Due to large class sizes, in some of my music classes students have to share instruments.
Normally sharing is a good thing, but in my classroom it slows learning because we have to repeat many times so that all children have a chance to play. This is frustrating for all students as we cannot move as quickly through our lessons as we should. Learning our music more quickly will give my students a chance to advance their drumming skills and expand their musical horizons.
