Building A Cohesive Community With Collaborative Seating

My Students

Our school is located in a wonderful urban neighborhood. We have an extremely active community with multi-generations of family members and school staff coming together to enrich the learning experience for our students. Family members volunteer their time to work with students in many different capacities. The school combines both low income and middle income families from different cultures. Our community places an emphasis on a well rounded education, were children are taught about the importance of diversity, inclusiveness, perseverance and how to care for each other and the environment.

My Project

In our classroom we focus on equity and making access to learning available for all learners. The traditional classroom structure often hinders students from learning how to work as a community.

By structuring our classroom environment with circle tables it will create small community groups where students will be more engaged in discussions about math, science and literacy.

Offering space for smaller table groups will assist students with special needs or the shy student to feel included as an essential part of the classroom community. Over time, I would like to continue to enhance the environment through flexible seating which would allow student to use their agency to select their best learning spaces within the community.
