My Students

My dream as a teacher is to have my students learn to make smart choices and to take responsibility for their learning. I want to set up a Math Daily 3 where they will get to choose what they need to work on. Playing fraction games or doing math facts, the items in my project will help us get there!

This is my first year teaching and I feel very fortunate to have an amazing 5th grade class full of kids who are excited about learning.

As a new teacher, I am lacking in materials such as math games and things for the kids to practice math facts. My school is an amazing school! We have an inquiry approach to teaching that will help the students learn by asking questions, thinking about their questions, coming up with answers and then reflecting on what they have learned. We believe that this will teach them to be thinkers and problems solvers in our ever changing world. I want my students to make connections between what they are learning in the classroom to the outside world. I am always awed to hear the connections they are making on a daily basis. Kids are smart and if they are given the opportunity and the challenge to explore the world around them, the world is the limit! I want to help them as best I can by providing them with the learning environment that will foster that.

My Project

I plan to set up a Math Daily 3 environment in my classroom. This is where the students will be able to choose between three activities: math by myself, math with someone or math writing. I believe that this will help the students to feel responsible for their learning by being able to choose what they need to work on. In math by myself, they would be able to choose to do worksheets, use the Math Wrap ups to practice their math facts or play math games on the Kindle Fires. These activities will enhance their learning in a new and fun way. In math with someone, I would use the pizza fraction game as one of their choices. I feel that students learn better when they are able to have a choice in how they learn. In today's technological world, kids relate well with electronics. They are good with them, learn quickly on them and have fun doing it. I know that the Kindles would be in high demand, so this might also help with any behavior issues. It will help my autistic student too!

The donations in my project will help my students to learn in a fun environment and also give me the tools to provide them with choices in how they learn.

Every child learns differently and the items I have chosen will give them a variety of ways to learn. As a new teacher, my classroom is lacking in materials. I know that my students and I would be overjoyed with gratitude at having any of these items donated to our classroom. Learning should be fun. That is how kids become life long learners!
