My Project
My co-teacher and I are starting from scratch to set up our school's first 2nd grade integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom. Students with disabilities often have to go to school far from home to get the supports they need, but our school is striving to create a truly inclusive space in which students with diverse needs can learn together in their immediate community. In our classroom, we want our students to feel they belong, know they are loved, and reach their full potential.
In order for our students to learn as effectively and independently as possible, we need to set up our classroom in a structured way that is easy for them to navigate.
As a new public school teacher, I'm starting the year without most essentials (e.g., a class pencil sharpener). The storage bins and schedule pocket charts will be used to organize the classroom space. We will use the magnets to hang anchor charts, reference posters, and visuals from the board. The rocking leaf chairs will give students who would benefit from their motion alternative seating options so that they can concentrate during class. With the TPT gift card, we can access materials created by experienced teachers that will help us to reach all our learners and reinforce what they're learning.
Students learn best when they feel valued in the classroom and lessons are meaningful to them. The bulletin board supplies will be used to decorate our bulletin board to match our warm environment. The mirror will be surrounded by various affirmations, and when students come to class each morning, they will say one of their choosing to themselves to start the day right. The games will be used both as a reward and as a social-emotional learning tool.
