My students need a variety of books (18 titles) discussing what it means to be an individual and what it is like to be different for our first book study unit.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like on your first day of school? Children have many fears and questions about their new teacher and peers. Help my students feel comfortable in their new classroom by giving us books to celebrate our differences.
I teach English as a Second Language at a public, urban charter school in Indiana.
Over 90% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch at our school. My students are bright, eager, and hard working despite some of the obstacles they face as second language learners and living in poverty.
My Project
I am requesting many different books that discuss individuality and being different for our first book study unit of the year. My hope is that these books will inspire my students to see their differences as benefits to our classroom and that we can use these books to create a classroom culture of mutual respect and inclusiveness.
I have chosen books from my own knowledge of childhood literature and from Frank Serafini's book on The Reading Workshop - Creating Space For Readers to make sure they are of great instructional quality.
Please consider donating to my project, so that my students can have a great start to their year.
I have found that great books make students excited to read and that creating a positive classroom culture is the foundation for any real learning.
