Building a Bridge to Community Through Books

Help me give my students this beautiful book. It is a story about learning to love where you live. Each time I read it with my students they are moved and find connection to self.

My Project

I often purchase books for my students that connect to what we have read in class. Last Stop On Market Street is a favorite from our adopted curriculum. In the past I've purchased book sets to read together in small group and some years when I can afford it I gift my students a paperback copy. They get really excited to hold in their hands a book that we've read in whole group reading time. That makes me so happy!

Houston County Texas, where the Early Childhood Center I teach at is located, is the one of the poorest counties in Texas.

Most of the families that come through my door do not earn a living wage or have any kind of health care. When I ask, most times the answer to "Do you have books to read at home?" is a sad "No."

Families choose not to use the city library because they cannot afford to replace books that are lost or ruined and because work schedules and family life don't allow much spare time. I would like to be able to gift a hardback copy to my young friends as a seed from which their library will grow and their love of literature will continue. The majority of my classroom qualify as ESL students and since we read this in our classroom, hopefully they will be able to and interested in reading aloud to family and friends as their skills grow.
