Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your history classes? For many, the thought of history evokes dry lectures and textbook readings about chronology and irrelevant events. ("Bueller?") For my sixth graders, however, studying history means interviewing peers to create oral histories, conducting historical research to create museum exhibits, and crafting documentaries and TED Talks.

In my sixth grade history classroom, I try to bring ancient history to life through project-based learning, collaboration, and technology.

I teach one hundred and twenty, brilliant, resilient, and thoughtful students of color, many of whom are impacted by trauma. By teaching them to develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills, I hope to help them better understand historical inequities in order to fight for social justice.

My Project

If you’ve been following my project page, you may have noticed that I’ve spent the past several years expanding and diversifying in the selection of books in my classroom library. This library renewal project has been an incredible success, with nearly 10 new books checked out and returned daily and students from other classes and grades coming by to pick up books. As a result, the shelves that I personally sourced and purchased on craigslist several years ago are no longer large enough to fully contain our amazing library.

By purchasing these larger versions of our current classroom shelves, I will be able to spread out our books and display more front facing titles, similar to a bookstore.

I create a weekly display of titles around a given theme, and I have noticed that students typically gravitate towards these books. With larger shelves, I can create multiple front facing displays that will entice students to check out books throughout the day. I will also be able to expose students to less traffic areas of the library which are currently harder to physically reach (ie crammed and close to the floor).
