Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title I charter school in California in a Latino immigrant community and are all striving to be first-generation college students. They are by and large incredibly bright, earnest, kind, and funny.

As a staff and organization, we do as much as we can to support our students' success in three main pillars - College, Leadership, and Life.

Students take a rigorous course load of A-G courses, participate in numerous after-school and extracurricular activities, play sports, develop leadership through student government, and develop strong relationships to support each other through their four years of high school and beyond.

My Project

My students come to our school with a huge range of reading levels and abilities, but many of them enter 9th grade with reading levels in the lower elementary grades. My students WANT to become better readers and WANT to "grow their brains," but often express that they don't know where to access books to read "for fun." I plan on requiring students to read at least 4 independent, choice books next year, and I want to make as many books as possible available to them in my own classroom library. We do not have a school library, and this seriously limits their access to engaging, culturally relevant and relatable books.

My students are thirsting for books in which they see themselves, books written by people with similar experiences to them, books they could see themselves writing one day.

I want my students to be excited about reading, about making book choices for themselves, and about learning new words, ideas, writing styles, and more. These books, some "classics" and some newer young-adult reads penned by authors of color and featuring characters and protagonists of color, will add so much value and excitement to my classroom library, and will benefit my students for years and years to come.
