Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It is hard to imagine facing the challenges my five year old students face each day. All of my students are beginning English Learners, attending school and learning in an unfamiliar language. Several have experienced the stresses of immigration. Nearly all come from low-income households. My students are already survivors in many ways.
Despite the barriers they face, my students are energetic, enthusiastic learners.
They tackle learning a new language along with challenging academic expectations each day. Each of my students deserves the very best kindergarten experience possible, and I plan to prepare each child to succeed.
My Project
My students come to school with limited vocabulary, little knowledge of letters and sounds, and limited experience with reading and math. Most do not have access to books and learning materials at home, and many of their parents are limited in their ability to help at home. I use every minute of class time to maximize student learning.
My students will learn so much this year, and they need tools to help make their hard work fun!
We will use the pipe cleaners and beads to make number bracelets to build number sense. We'll practice writing numbers, letters, and words outside with sidewalk chalk. We'll use the puzzles and word building centers to practice beginning skills in a fun way. Each learning tool will be used, loved, and appreciated.
