Build Understanding by Visualizing Science Texts

My students need dry erase markers and regular markers to create visualizations of science concepts and processes they learn about by reading texts.

My Students

Learning biology isn't easy. Lectures only get you so far. Labs are exciting, but you can't observe every process directly. Scientists learn much of what they need to know by reading. An effective practice for helping students read to learn is to visualize concepts from text through drawing.

My high school students have a desire to succeed and they know that education is important.

They are strong-willed and high-energy. They stay after school and are involved in their communities. But they don't all have the resources to support their learning at home or in the classroom. They are mostly African American and Latino kids who come from a high poverty urban area and attend a small public school that focuses on developing leadership skills and college readiness. Most students arrive to high school without strong literacy skills. Struggling to read and write has a direct effect on how successful students feel about learning science--that is to say, students are often intimidated by complex texts and give up rather than struggle with hard science concepts. In this century, the United States needs more young people ready to tackle the difficult problems with science. Career opportunities abound if we can peak student interest and make learning science more accessible.

My Project

My goal is to build a classroom culture where students are willing to tackle difficult texts and discuss what they mean. Since biology involves an understanding of life processes that can't often be seen, students will periodically read and then draw their understanding of those processes on 2' X 3' white boards or posters. Once they have visualized a concept, other students can provide feedback, and students may revise their visualizations. Finally, visualizations can be paired with explanations (in writing or whole class discussion) so that students can demonstrate their understanding. This type of work will bring a level of creativity to a subject area that students don't usually associate with art. It will uncover a variety of thinking and learning styles, and give students a way to discuss their understanding of a text with each other. Writing on white boards will give students the freedom to revise their thinking as they receive feedback.

Your donation to this project will provide access to seemingly basic resources that will help all students to deeply engage with science texts.

These resources will be the foundation upon which students learn to make their thinking and understanding known. They will encourage discussion and revision and improve confidence in tackling difficult science concepts.
