My Project
My Earth Science class has many special needs students, and they are always more engaged when there is something in their hands that they can directly relate to our lesson. Flour and salt combine to make a versatile dough that is cheap, non-toxic, and versatile to make models of the Earth and its systems that connect tactile learning directly to the curricula. Sand and potting soil will allow my students to actually model water flow, erosion, and bank stabilization with real materials and for many different soil types.
The ability to model, touch, and feel the Earth will greatly enhance my students' understanding and engagement with their classroom studies and the environment around them.
Learning is so much easier when it feels like play, and if I can connect that to real world environmental concerns, it will increase their civic responsibility as well.
