This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are the ECGTHS special education department, and we are looking to build our struggling reader library. We service eighty-six students in grades nine through twelve who have various needs. Our school has started a reading initiative where all students have to have a book to read and complete reading journals by the end of each quarter. However, the books stocked in our school library are often grade-level books.

Many of our students are remedial readers, who become frustrated when trying to read at this level and they often skip out on the reading journals entirely, which affects their quarter grades greatly.

Many of our students also struggle to access books independently outside of school either due to financial reasons or lack of transportation to the public library. Therefore, we are looking to provide accessible books for our students to be kept in the special education department to use as needed. We wish to foster the love and habit of reading for our students by removing barriers where we can.
