My students are part of a Gifted and Talented Spanish Dual Immersion program in a high poverty neighborhood. Half of them are native English speakers and half are native Spanish speakers.
Their goal is to leave elementary school, not only speaking two languages, but also reading well and writing properly in all academic subjects.
Despite coming from economically disadvantaged families, these students have worked hard to earn their place in this program. They are the cream of the crop at our school and help to set the bar for the rest of the students. Helping our dual immersion students is to ensure their success as future bilingual leaders in our community.
My Project
We need more Spanish books to add to our classroom library. Some of our students can speak Spanish well enough but they struggle to write it properly.
Reading is one of the best ways to increase vocabulary and to learn proper grammar and spelling from an authentic context.
The state provides some nonfiction texts about science and social studies but students also need to read books that are fun.
I try to select books written by Hispanic authors because the stories they tell tend to be naturally infused with Latin culture. Most world language teachers would agree that reading authentic texts is more beneficial to students than reading translated ones.
More than half of students from low‑income households
