My Students

The seventh grade students at our rural Eastern, North Carolina school, are focused on getting to and through college, despite the challenges they face living in a low-income setting.

They are excited to grow their knowledge, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful later in life.

They work with urgency and grit to reach their goals, and they truly understand that their work and learning is never done. They are eager to make a difference in their lives, the lives of their families, and in their community as a whole.

My Project

I am excited that my students took the initiative to problem-solve and find a way for our class to build a library with these titles. Several students brainstormed and thought that creating a project for books, through Donorschoose, would be the best option for our class.

Our class library is small, and has been built entirely by purchases made by me and by donations of books from previous Donorschoose projects.

This collection of books, while small, has greatly increased student interest in reading. However, we do not have very many books, and without more, we risk student interest petering out, due to lack of access to material.

Recently, my class was discussing the fact that our library has few books, and how we could solve this problem. They are interested in reading, but we have few books for them to read. One of them asked, "Could we raise donations for books?" After some class-wide discussion, my students researched ways to fundraise and quickly came across Donorschoose. They, then, decided collectively, that a student-led project would be the best option to get the books we need.
