Build and Test Prosthetic Leg Prototypes

My Students

My grade 8 students are enthusiastic, typical middle school students who love the chance to learn with hands-on projects that help make real-world connections. Students who attend live in town, and a small percentage are school choice students from surrounding towns. All students have an opportunity to participate in STEM class as a core class in grade 8, meeting throughout the school year. This year the majority of students are attending in a hybrid model, with about 10% fully remote.

Attending school in a hybrid model makes it difficult to work in small groups on their projects, and more supplies are needed due to sharing restrictions.

Students are encouraged to get involved in their community through school clubs and extra curricular activities that meet virtually.

Designed as a second math/science class, incorporating STEM disciplines, the students are fortunate to have access to curriculum that will help foster critical thinking and problem-solving in a fun and creative class.

My Project

The materials requested will be used in combination with common household materials like string, bath towels, shoes, duct tape, and carboard tubes to create prosthetic lower leg prototypes.

Using the engineering design process my students will develop a prosthetic.

My students will become biomedical engineers, listing characteristics and features that are important, analyzing their prosthetic leg and making suggestions for design improvements. Students will test the prosthetic prototype by bending a knee and resting it on the prosthesis. Ultimately, students will showcase their prototypes in the school lobby for other grade level students to view.
