My Project
I work at an amazing school tucked in the birch forests of central Alaska. As a special education teacher, I work with students with intensive special education needs: autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, Down Syndrome, etc. We work hard to meet students where they are and support them academically, socially and behaviorally.
My team and I work hard to teach our students to regulate their emotions and meet their sensory needs in a wide variety of ways.
My brain break area is one of the most important spaces in my classroom and I have many students visit it throughout the day. With supplies funded by this project I will be able to give my brain break space a much needed revamping with new and exciting rewards and activities. Fidgets, a new chair and a weighted blanket would all be utilized and available to meet students sensory and emotional needs. Snacks, books and legos would create additional opportunities for my students needs to be met. With snacks I would meet their basic need for food when disregulated, books would help pre-teach about neurodiversity and acceptance of yourself and others and legos are an amazing reward for students who work hard and meet their goals.
I'm excited for the opportunities to use all these tools to find new creative ways to meet the emotional needs of the students I serve. I believe helping students learn to identify what they need to meet their own needs is one of the most powerful tools we can give them.
