My Students

Students at my school love to learn, and can acquire so much more knowledge if only we had the resources. Some of these students are described as limited English students, delinquent, migratory students, or students with disabilities. The total enrollment is approximately 667 students. The ethnic composition is comprised of approximately 62% Black, 11% White, 20% Hispanic, .2% American Indian, 3% Asian, and 3% two or more races. In this school, 64.5% of the students are eligible for the free or reduced meals program.

One of the ways I want to inspire a love of learning for my students is through computer science.

Computers are a ubiquitous reality in students' lives, yet only 1 in 4 schools teach computer science. Computer science and technology are the fastest growing job markets, and digital literacy is an almost universal requirement for students’ postsecondary success. As teachers, we need to learn and adapt to new technologies to stay ahead of the curve and prepare our students for their futures.

My Project

Robotics is helping teachers to expand beyond linear, text-based learning and to engage students who learn best in other ways. One of those ways is introducing Cubelets into the elementary classroom. Cubelets are small robotic blocks that work together to build different types of robots. These magnetic blocks work by snapping together to make an endless variety of robots. Students can build robots that drive around on a tabletop, respond to light, sound, and temperature, and they also have lifelike behavior. There are a myriad of lessons that Cubelets can teach that are cross-curricular. For example, Cubelets can help students develop an understanding of cause and effect and how it relates to the building and testing of Cubelet robots and help students write If/Then statements based on cause and effect. In just that one lesson, students are engaged in ISTE standards (International Society for Technology Education), Common Core Language Arts standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. Building robots with Cubelets inspires a love of learning, sparks curiosity, and encourages self-directed learning.

Some of us think about robots as being giant machines that build cars and Hollywood creations too impossible to be real.

But in reality, robots are in our everyday lives in many ways such as automatic vacuum cleaners to toys for kids. Many educators are using robotics to teach their students in novel ways in today’s classroom. Robots can engage students and teach critical concepts in math and science in a fun and hands-on way. Robots are quickly becoming a popular way to catch and keep students' attention. Robotics can also be a fun stepping-stone for getting students interested in STEM disciplines that can lead to amazing careers in their future. Cubelets encourages curiosity and helps students thrive in an increasingly complex world.
