Bug Coaches & Zoo Crew: First Graders Investigate the Wild!

Help me give my students oversized insects and animal models so they can coach one another through hands-on science investigations about living things.

This project is fully funded

My Project

In first grade, learning works best when students can see, touch, and explore the world around them. In our classroom, students learn through coaching conversations, where they guide one another’s thinking rather than simply waiting for the teacher to provide answers.

To support our coaching conversations, I am requesting a giant bug collection and realistic zoo animal figures that students can use during hands-on science investigations.

These models will allow students to closely observe insects and animals while working in small coaching teams.

During our science exploration time, students will rotate through team roles such as Observation Coach, Detail Spotter, Question Asker, and Evidence Recorder. As they study the giant insects, students might ask each other questions like, “What body parts do you notice?” or “How do you think this insect protects itself?” When examining the animal figures, students will compare animals, discuss habitats, and think about how animals survive in the wild.

The oversized insects make it easy for young learners to see details like wings, legs, and body segments. The zoo animals will help students explore topics such as habitats, movement, and how animals care for their young.

These materials turn science into an active investigation rather than a passive lesson. Students will practice observing carefully, sharing ideas, and building understanding together through conversation and teamwork.

Through these coaching-style activities, my first graders will not only learn about insects and animals, but they will also develop important skills like communication, collaboration, and curiosity about the natural world.
