My students need supplies such as pencils, crayons, markers, paper, measuring tapes, and a pencil sharpener so they can do their work despite budget cuts.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine what would it be like going to school without a pencil? The majority of my students come from poor families. Years ago teachers used to get money for supplies but,due to budget cuts, materials are now a luxury.
I teach a wonderful group of third graders in New York City.
They are all Hispanic. My students attend a school in a very poor neighborhood. They are very motivated and eager to learn. Some of them get ready for school on their own as their parents work long hours.
My students love school. They enjoy reading and writing. As part of the curriculum, we study communities from around the world. They learn to write essays. They also write many informational books. My students love to work in collaboration, not only with their peers but also with other classes. My third graders are very proud of their families. We make sure to include their families in classroom activities, school celebrations, and field trips. The children in my class are friendly, respectful, and very responsible.
My Project
My classroom is a place that is alive. Students are always working, creating, researching and learning. My students need supplies such as pencils, crayons, markers, paper, measuring tapes, and a pencil sharpener. These supplies are going to have a tremendous impact in this dynamic. Family resources are very limited in the area where our school is located. Families have to struggle to pay their bills and provide for their kids. Due to budget cuts, we are obligated to ask the parents for supplies that we would have provided them with before.
Another impact of the budget cuts is limiting the number of projects our students engage in or completing them with very limited resources. If we got these supplies, I can imagine the beautiful books my students would write. To comply with the common core standards, students are expected to write different types of essays. My students will have not only the paper and pencils they need to write but also a sharpener, a tool we don't always have. These supplies, as basic as they look, will have a great impact in my class.
If we find a donor, my students will take ownership of the materials.
We will have class discussions on how to save the supplies. As a class, we will plan on how the materials will be used. It will also give the opportunity for my students to appreciate what they have and learn to share. Supporting this project will not only impact my students but also their families and their teacher.
