My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met Eric Carle. Last year my students ran out of pencils in January, and my library books are dwindling.

My students are a lovely, motivated and curious bunch of second grade children who live in an urban area.

Coming from mostly Latino backgrounds, they often struggle with comprehension, production and the acquisition of the English language. Having tactile experiences, particularly through the use of technology, can help to close these gaps. Furthermore, when they are provided with meaningful and purposeful reading experiences (like listening to a story being read out loud) that allow them to apply what they have learned, their language growth is phenomenal.

My Project

In this day and age, technology plays an important part in our daily lives. Technology induces awe within young children which makes the infusion of technology into classroom reading instruction very motivating for children. The LCD projector and pencils will be used during reading workshop; for students to read literature together chorally, to analyze and discuss literature in small groups and for read-alouds by the teacher. My students will enjoy reading more and will improve their reading comprehension. Last year, my students read and researched information on-line to create PowerPoint presentations about American symbols. I remember the pride that spread over their faces as they used technology to make themselves better readers and writers. This project was a huge success for my students! This is an experience I want to be able to give them over and over in different ways. Do you remember the sense of empowerment that you felt when you discovered that you could read anything?

As their educator, I can give my students the real-life experience of reading and analyzing well written literature, while using these works as models for their own writing.

Providing my students with a variety of experiences with literature will ignite their true potential as readers and future writers. So, close your eyes and imagine the squeals of delight when a student can say "Abuelo, I can finally read on my own. Look at this book I just learned how to read
