Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our classroom is a place where our students take responsibility for their learning. This means they are free to move to any spot to read, research, write, and explore throughout the classroom that allows them to complete their assignment successfully and comfortably.
Our classroom is full of students with a wide range of learning abilities and styles.
We strive daily to meet our students where they are and take them to to the next level in their academic journey. Our students come from loving families that live in an economically challenged neighborhood. They are bright, energetic, eager learners.
My Project
During our Readers Workshop block our students use their book boxes to shop for books at their just right level as well as favorites and ones that will expand their mind by either challenging their reading or by reading about a nonfiction topic. This is also where they store their Daily 5 activities and their differentiated Word Sorts that meet them at their independent spelling levels. Their book boxes are the place where they organize their science and social studies based research projects and buddy reading work. The boxes travel with them throughout their entire morning. The students need to carry them from work stations, centers, guided reading groups, the classroom library corner, and back to their seats. They need to be sturdy enough to hold all the supplies but light enough to be carried by a child. Our book boxes work almost as hard as our students do everyday.
The Lakeshore book boxes are sturdy, colorful, and lightweight.
The students will enjoy being able to choose their own color for their book box. This will lead to pride in ownership. It will also speed up the process of getting out book boxes because they will only need to look at the ones that are their color. The fact that these will not collapse means less misplaced materials.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
