This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It seems the pressures of life creep in earlier with each generation. With this in mind, I prefer the proactive approach and it's all about our Big Buddies Program. Pairing my wide-eyed, little Pre-Kindergartener's with 5th grade students who think they're ready for the world is a perfect match!

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Aside from the 3-4 adult-led activities, my classroom has 15 independent centers that change with each new theme. A 5th grade teacher & I collaborated to create, develop, & implement a partnership between grade levels that would promote social connections & responsibility while fostering friendship & caring. The Big Buddies Program is the result of that collaboration. Our students have enjoyed 8 successful years of this fun, rewarding association. This year, we'd like to add an Anti-Bullying component to our program.

My Project

We often hear about the benefits of having a mentor, but I believe it is a two-way street of rewards. The perks for my young learners come via the individual recognition, encouragement, and support they receive from their Big Buddies. The 5th grade students feel a sense of accomplishment as they lead activities coupled with the pride of being revered by their Little Buddies. This is an ideal setting to address bullying. Book sharing is a regular part of our Big Buddies Program, and I'd like to establish a library of titles on the topic that will encourage further discussion between all students. I'm requesting additional copies of "Bullying In Schools" to share with the 5th grade teacher for use in her classroom. Art projects are a favorite of Big Buddies and Little Buddies alike. Simple supplies like colorful paper, glue, and scissors lead to magical moments. Sidewalk chalk is another bonding activity that promotes trust through interaction and cooperation.

To an outsider, The Big Buddies Program appears nothing more than a bunch of children chatting & laughing over crafts or snacks.

It is during these seemingly casual social gatherings, that both groups of students gain self-esteem, build self-confidence, develop responsibility, & foster friendship. The Big Buddies Program has accomplished so much already. Incorporating anti-bullying lessons into our activities seems the next logical and necessary step in preparing all students for the big world!
