My scholars are a creative and innovative group. My goal is to help them realize their potential by cultivating academic excellence and recognizing their individual strengths. While there have been many new challenges this school year as we navigate new ways of learning since the COVID-19 pandemic, my scholars are meeting these challenges with resilience, flexibility, and perseverance.
As we prepare for the new school year, we are considering ways to make our small-group reading instruction more approachable, relevant, culturally diverse, and fun.
With this in mind, I have chosen "Bud, Not Buddy" as our beginning-of-year small-group reading text for 3rd-6th grade reading support groups. This is written by a Michigan author and takes place in Michigan. It also features characters, settings, and situations that my scholars can relate to and see themselves in.
With this project, I will be able to rotate amongst reading groups with a full small-group set of ten "Bud, Not Buddy" texts. We will study historical fiction, text structure, character, and conflict with a story that is approachable and culturally relevant for my scholars. This will also connect to their social studies standards. In addition, I have included a CD audio version of the story for scholars who may be absent and miss reading group, who need additional supports, or who have accommodations.
