My Students
We are ready to roll out our bucket drumming unit... we only have one problem. We don't have any drum sticks!
Our students love the arts and being able to express themselves creatively.
Each class (Kindergarten through 8th Grade) has both music and art twice a week with limited materials and suffer at the expense of a financial crisis they didn't create. While we do our best with what we have, I would love to offer the best experience I can to these students while they are in music class.
Our school is a small, high achieving neighborhood school in the heart of a large urban city. The small size of our school (one of each grade K- 8th grade, and a full K-8 program for students on the Autism Spectrum) contributes to our unique family atmosphere that values fundamental regard for all children. Our learning community serves an economically and culturally diverse population of students living both in the surrounding neighborhood and communities from around the city, all of whom receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
My Project
Putting a pair of drumsticks in each child's hands will allow them to participate at the same time. Using the drumsticks will improve coordination that will apply to other instruments in the music classroom.
Research shows all the benefits playing drums can have on elementary age students ranging from emotional, social and how two hemispheres of the brain can be directly affected! Drumming can enhance creativity and creative expression. It stimulates the right brain hemisphere which is the power house for audial input and the source for creativity. Activating both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously is a rare experience. We tend to all be a little left brain dominant so over time, it can bring a balance in the brain. This can also provide peace, healing, higher self-esteems and higher level thinking. Drums can be used to release troubling emotions. Anger, sadness, doubt, fear and even depressed states, can be observed and released through drumming actions.
With your help, I can bring the hands-on drumming experiences to all levels of our students.
Fostering a love for music and promoting self-confidence, allows them to realize they can use their minds and bodies together positively. Drumming is a fabulous, heart-opening, and social activity that I believe ALL students should have access to no matter where they live or what school they attend. Thank you!
