Slowly over the years, I've transformed my classroom design by stopping the use of overhead lights. I bought lamps and things that light up and use those in the overhead lights' place. Students have explained that they feel more productive and calmer. There are fewer behavior problems in my room. I've put rockers on my chairs and have alternate seating options to make the students feel like my classroom is more like part of their home than a sterile place they must learn. Designing my classroom to be more of a sensory room has been beneficial to all students. I incorporate various items that engage different senses to create a therapeutic and calming environment. My room is designed to be a calming and safe space.
Soft lighting, comfortable seating, and other comfort promote relaxation, helping individuals feel secure in their environment.
